Michael Francis: Contesting Catholic Identity: The Foundation of Newman College, Melbourne, 1914-18
Contesting Catholic Identity: The Foundation of Newman College, Melbourne, 1914–18, by Michael Francis, traces the historical events leading to the opening of the C ollege. The book reveals that, by the time it opened its doors, Newman College had come to represent far more than just a residence for a relatively small number of university students; it was a litmus test for the very nature of Catholic identity in the state of Victoria.
One hundred years to the day, the book will be launched by Dr Val Noone O AM, fellow of the School of Historical and Philosophical Studies at the University of Melbourne. The evening will also feature a performance of the C eltic harp by Ms Amelia Le Plastrier, after which copies of Michael’s book will be available for purchase. Light refreshments will also be provided.
