Circe’s Carnival of Vice

11 – 22 June 2025

Bloomsday in Melbourne presents Circe’s Carnival of Vice, a new adaptation of the infamous Circe episode of Ulysses at fortyfivedownstairs (Melbourne’s leading independent theatre venue), 45 Flinders Lane, Melbourne from 11-22 June 2025.

When men fall under the spell of Circe, what can they become?  This is James Joyce’s most sustained engagement with the New Psychiatry and Sexology.  It is a wild carnival ride of surreal hallucinations exploring the outer realms of gender identity and sexuality in Dublin 1904 – an over-the-top world of music, laughter… and vice. This production coincides with the centenary of the Free State’s razing of Monto, the red-light district of Dublin. Joyce’s treatment is gritty, iconoclastic, moving, and uproarious.
